I just bought the plans from Kolb to build one of these. Can you reply here with your 2 blade prop diameter? I want to know how far the prop tip is from the ground when you are taxiing. Your paint looks great. Thanks

The weakness on the ultrastar was its weak landing gear, and the limited space you had to squeeze in a prop. You can't keep going up in prop size like you could on a tractor configuration with the propellor up front. Bigger prop turning slower ==> more thrust. The strength of the ultrastar was it was foldable so you could squeeze it into a covered trailer, and you had your body out up front so if you ever did crash, the pilot would take most of the impact and not the plane. Dead pilots you can replace... plane parts not so much so. :-p That's not true actually, the tube frame under the seat would be mangled and that is a b1tch to straighten out with tons of cuts and welds and crazy geometry. If you still want to fly an Ultrastar after watching this video, well, you got more bigger brassy ****s than me! ruclips.net/video/_j5fJ9lBXTs/видео.html I opted for the VJ-24w which is even more super elegant bare minimum plane minamilist but looks a whole lot like an Ultrastar (I suspect Kolb blatant ripped off Volmer's VJ-24e with the motor located in the back - Volmer found that was a damn dangerous location for it if you were foot launching and moved it up front and added landing gear and a seat), and flies a lot slower. Never did finish my project though... got into quadcopters and I could never fly boring straight ever again... volmerjensen.air-war.org I've been told by a reputable source who's bought and flown quite a few ultralights and other little planes, the Syraider Kitfox is the most enjoyable one to fly. That's not me plugging the Skyraider Kitfox, that's just someone who's tested a lot of them telling me the real world results. The cheapest and safest and most conveinent way to fly... I found after having a lot of skin in the game, was not ultralights, it wasn't even paramotors or parasailing or hang gliders... it was FPV RC long range wings and quad copters. Now that digital FPV goggles are available, you don't have to be in a cockpit any more to enjoy flying... www.homebuiltairplanes.com/forums/members/choppergirl.37217/#about Almost bought an Ultrastar project plane myself for $700, once upon a time... fpv.air-war.org
They aren't cheap or made any more; most people get them out of snowmobile junkyards and refurbish them. A two cylinder Cuyuna could run you anywhere from $500 to $1000. I bought one identical to this for $220, but it had a detonated cylinder head pison, and I never got around to fixing it and probably never will. The seals dry out on them over time, the rubber hoses crack, and if you ever get a lean condition you destroy the engine... they are kind of a pain to get running sweet I imagine, though I've read a lot of docs on them.
When you crash, the pilot's body and the front cockpit cage absorbs the impact. Of course, the pilot is killed, but those can be replaced. The cockpit cage though with all those complex cuts and angles is a royal total b1tch to repair and weld. It's not simple.
Very nice! I like the low engine placement and the high boom and horizontal stabilizer and elevator placement. Many advantages to this configuration.
Very pretty Ultrastar. You seldom see these anymore. Good job on the video!
Nice plane, it's looks so simple design but fun to fly
Worked with Homer called for 5 years in the 80s. Is recommended to use a gap seal between the main wing and the ailerons.
plans are for sale from kolb aircraft, they can also provide prebuilt components and the welded fuselage cage
beautifull video thanks
I need one of this
Would be neat if it could somehow have an enclosed cockpit.
I would LOVE to have one!!! How much???

What prop and red. Ratio are you running on the ultra star
I don't recall. I traded the Ultrastar and cash for a Slingshot.
Hey, I know you. Nice airplane Malcolm.
New kit or did you finish someone else's project?
It was previously built and flown. I cleaned it up, recovered, many new parts...
Spectacular job! Looks beautiful.
Thanks Jerry
